Birthday Card Making

Saturday, March 27th, 2010 | Card Making, Craft | No Comments

March is a very busy Birthday month, well more specifically the 28th of March.. As it is my Dad and my Nan’s Birthday.  This year was a special one for my Nan as she turned 80.

I like to make a little effort and do home made cards for that personal touch. I like simplistic designs and thought I’d share my latest creations with you.

Dad’s Birthday card.. very simple, red base card. Nice and easy to make but very effective. I used a smaller piece of black card and stuck to it a section of black brightly coloured birthday paper. I used a rub on transfer for the word “Dad”

Nan’s 80th Birthday card.. I thought quite a lot about this one, as I wanted something simple yet special. I chose a light green paper to go on a white base card. I matched the green paper with the printer and designed and printed the centre. I also used a brass stencil to subtly embellish the top of the card.

New Cookie cutters

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009 | Cooking, Craft | No Comments

A few weeks a go I noticed Lidl were doing some home baking stuff and that they had cookie cutters.  I’m always on the look out for decent ones that are a good size but not too pricey.. they all seem so expensive!

There was lots of lovely cutters and it came with a storage ring, though not sure how all of those will fit!  But not only does it include the usual shapes the set also has a Christmas tree, Holly leaf, bell, snowman and Angel which is  a bonus for this time of year.

Lovely stars in different sizes and hearts in different sizes too. I don’t think I’ll be needing to buy any more cutters for a very long time.. Just need to start using them now!

Christmas shoebox appeal

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 | Craft, Life | No Comments

At this time of year the little ones school takes part in the Rotary Christmas Shoebox Scheme. I decided it would be a good thing to take part so that the little one can see and hopefully appreciate how fortunate we are.  Even when things are “not fair” because I can’t buy this and that at the drop of a hat, and of course to give a child a nice Christmas who otherwise might not have got anything this year.

We chose to make up a box for a boy between the ages of 4 and 8. The leaflet the school sent out gave us ideas on what to include but it had to be items  for education, health and hygiene purposes.   We sat down and looked at the list and this is what we included in our box:

  • Small Lego set
  • Crayons
  • 2 x Colouring books
  • Matchbox toy car
  • 2 x Tooth Brush
  • Tooth paste
  • 2 x Soap
  • 2 x Flannel
  • Hat
  • Scarf
  • Gloves
  • Socks

I had seen on my various web trawls an idea a while a go about making flannel reindeer.. I thought this would be a nice little touch, unfortunately due to the disappearance  of the 100000’s of pipe cleaners we used to have they look more like bunny rabbits (hold that thought for Easter!) The brown pipe cleaners would have made the antlers!

Finger chopping.. It’s that time again!

Sunday, July 5th, 2009 | Craft, Life | No Comments

So probably almost a year ago, I had a little accident at work where I cut my index finger on my left had with the lovely sharp new blade I’d just put in my Swan Morton knife. It was a nice clean cut what with the blade being new, I cleanly sliced of the right hand side corner tip… nail and all… a lot of pain fair bit of blood, but nothing too serious, a bodge job done at work by the “first aider” (and I use that term very lightly) meant my finger was wrapped in paper towel and taped with masking tape. A trip to the walk in centre on my way home had me patched up and dressed properly.

Friday afternoon however was a slightly different story but along the same lines… same scenario at work same finger, however no nice new blade. A larger cut and not so clean lost the right hand corner tip again but also cut down to just past the start of my fingernail leaving me with quite a chunky flapping bit of skin. This time round I just wrapped it in tissue and held it as tight as I could which did a very good job of stopping the bleeding and the pain. Another trip to the walk in centre on the way home… Finger free to the air and all was fine and pretty pain free until they had to clean it and in doing so pull back the flap of skin. OMG! So much pain and I realised the extent of the damage I had done!

A lot more blood started to free flow and my finger throbbed like mad, I had to put pressure on the cut to stem the bleeding while the nurse got the steri strip paper stitches ready, then it was quick fire release pressure apply steri strip, apply pressure, release pressure apply steri strip. These two steri strips did a wonderful job of stemming the blood and applying a fairly painful pressure enabling the other steri strips to be put in place. I was then gauzed and finger bandaged up….ET style. The nurse said I was lucky that I didn’t cut down the finger nail. I didn’t question why, I just thanked my blessings.

An appointment was made for a review and dressing change today at 12.30pm. All was good the dressing was removed and the cut was nice and dry. The nurse said the paper stitches would need to stay in place for 7 days and said that ideally I should let as much air as possible get to the cut.. but it was impractical to walk round with my finger up in the air for the next 7 days so a light breathable plaster was applied to give very limited protection from knocks and bangs… but you can bet your last penny that sever pain will be issued frequently with the slightest touch! Already had immense pain from the steering wheel!

And now for your viewing pleasure a few pictures. The first 3 are the before treatment while I was waiting to be seen at the walk in centre and were taken on my phone so are not very good quality. The second 3 are from the dressing change today … click to see bigger version if your that way inclined…

Card Making – Birthdays

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009 | Craft, Life, Money Saving | No Comments

Card making is a little hobby I have. I really enjoy it but I must admit I have good intentions but am usually far too disorganised and last minute to actually make cards in time. Resulting in a rush card purchase at the last minute!

I like to make simple cards that don’t take up too much time. Bold bright, clean designs that are not too fussy.

Today I was slightly more planned, but still a tad rushed to catch the post office before it closed, however I’m quite please with the two birthday cards I made today, both are now in transit to their recipients

Happy Birthday card 1

The first one is a very simple design with the use of some “happy birthday” backing paper I was very kindly given.

Another Simple design, this time using some stick on embellishments and a rub on transfer.
